Etsy tag autopsy

Etsy tags, autopsied.

Thirteen tags. Twenty characters each. Most sellers waste half of them on the same phrase in five costumes. Here's how the slots actually earn their place, with a full worked set.

The rules that matter

You get 13 tags, 20 characters each

Etsy caps each tag at 20 characters. Anything longer simply won't save, so long phrases have to be trimmed or split.

Multi-word tags beat single words

"mug" competes with everything. "gym mug for men" competes with a handful of listings and matches how people actually search.

Don't repeat the same phrase 13 times

Near-duplicate tags ("nurse gift", "gift for nurse", "nurse gifts") burn slots that could cover occasions, materials, styles or recipients.

Cover the whole search space

Spread tags across product type, audience, occasion, style, material and gift intent, that's how you show up in searches you didn't predict.

A full 13-tag set, slot by slot

Worked example for a retro football streetwear tee, the same product PODly uses in its demo Launch Pack. Every tag is under 20 characters and pulls a different job.

  1. 01retro football teeProduct type + style, the core search.
  2. 0290s football shirtEra language buyers actually type.
  3. 03vintage soccer teeUS spelling variant. Same product, different vocabulary.
  4. 04football gift menGift intent + recipient.
  5. 05away kit posterAdjacent product language from the same niche.
  6. 06terrace casual teeSubculture phrase, low competition, high intent.
  7. 07football fan giftBroad gift search, still niche-specific.
  8. 08oversized graphic teeFit and format, a real filter for buyers.
  9. 09gift for himOccasion catch-all. One slot, not four.
  10. 10retro sports printBridges into the print/poster search space.
  11. 11football birthdayOccasion-led search that spikes year round.
  12. 12nostalgia streetwearStyle descriptor for browsers, not searchers.
  13. 13unisex cotton teeMaterial + fit, for filtered searches.

Five ways sellers waste tags

  • Using all 13 slots on variations of one phrase.
  • Tags longer than 20 characters that silently get rejected.
  • Copying a competitor's tags without their product photos or reviews.
  • Brand or team names you don't have the rights to use.
  • Leaving slots empty, an unused tag is a free search you're not in.

Want a set like this for your idea?

PODly writes your title, description and tags as part of a full Launch Pack, and flags any tag over Etsy's 20-character limit before you paste it in.
